Milei and the Agricultural Sector: Support and Challenges

At the Palermo Rural Exhibition, President Javier Milei praised the agricultural sector, calling producers “heroes” and acknowledging the historical link between Argentina’s prosperity and agriculture. Despite discomfort over persistent export taxes and currency controls, Milei urged patience, reflecting his campaign promise to eliminate these taxes eventually, though without a set timeline. Nicolás Pino, president of the Argentine Rural Society, also emphasized patience. The government has not pressured producers to sell soy or offered preferential exchange rates. Amid challenging international conditions, the agricultural sector remains supportive of Milei's administration, as evidenced by a significant increase in wheat planting. The upcoming 2024/25 grain campaign will test this relationship further, with potential changes to current restrictions.
